Sharing in the Body of Christ

Sharing in communion brings us into fellowship with the body and blood of Christ’s sacrifice. It also brings us into one body with our fellow participants. Communion is thus a great privilege and blessing. But if we partake of it in a way that dishonors the body of our fellow Christians, we thereby offend against Christ himself. We need to live with proper regard for our brothers and sisters. Text: I Corinthians esp 10:14-22.

Reflecting God's Glory

The Glory of God traces a remarkable thread throughout the entirety of Scripture. In the Old Testament His glory was visible many times to the Israelites en route to the promised land. Since Christ's coming and the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, that same God, that same Glory, remains visible as the people of God allow their lives to be transformed by the work of the Holy Spirit.

Ambassadors Under Authority

The people of God represent the sovereign King of the universe, the Almighty God. They are the ambassadors of His Kingdom to a lost world. In order for them to properly represent His goals and objectives, they must be within the authority structure described in 1 Corinthians 11.

Who Gets The Glory?

People are naturally "glory thieves". We desire the recognition, honor, and applause of those around us. However, there is only One Who deserves all the glory - Almighty God!

Who is in Control

The battle for control of our hearts is an ongoing battle. Our self-will is a continual force that rises against the lordship of Christ. We must continually place Christ on the throne of our hearts and lives and allow Him to reign supreme.

The Most Important Command

"Master, which is the greatest commandment?" Jesus frequently answered difficult questions in such profound ways that His audience was left with no retort to give. Such was the case when He was asked about the most important command of the law. His answer was brief and yet so complete that it is readily imprinted on the minds of those who hear it even today. This message explores what Jesus taught as being most important in life and it's practical applications for today.  Matthew 22:34-40

Walking in the New Year

Resolutions! Many people make new resolutions each year only to find that their good intentions were short lived. Jesus wants those who follow Him to walk with Him daily and through the entire year. Come, follow Jesus and walk with Him in the way that pleases the LORD!  Ephesians 5:1-16

Elders in the Assembly

Jesus ' apostles placed local churches in the care of bodies of elders. Eldership is frequently referenced in Israel's history, but the New Testament teaching on elders is clearer. Elders are proven man of  unimpeachable character who are charged to serve as shepherds and overseers (bishops) in the church. Elders are brothers among brothers, but have a special charge both to teach and care for the saints and to guard against and confront teaching not in accordance with godliness.

Preparing for Christmas

Are you ready for Christmas? This question is asked countless times by people centered on the Christmas holiday and all of it's trappings. But what does it mean to be truly ready for Christmas? The answer is much deeper than the purchase of gifts and the planning of times with family and friends. Galatians 4:1-4

Simple Contentment

Contentment reveals much about the condition of the heart. Circumstances give opportunity for that condition to reveal itself. The wonderful truth is that even though circumstances change and life stresses threaten our contentment, the Eternal Nature of God gives us a solid footing and confidence to say, He is our helper. He will never leave us or forsake us!

Living with Open Hands

Better is one hand with tranquility than two fists full of labor and chasing after the wind. When we hold on to what we have, that will be our only reward. But if we choose to live with open hands God can put in or take out whatever he chooses. Joy and peace are the possessions of the person with open hands.

The Kingdom of God

A primary theme of Jesus' earthly ministry was the presentation of the Kingdom of God. The kingdom is too often misunderstood or ignored by many today, even those who would call themselves followers of Jesus. The call of Christ is to follow Him, in His Kingdom, today.

Reflections in Time

Time is passing by. The year is coming to an end. We all continue to age. The cycle of life repeats itself and sometimes that leaves us feeling purposeless and depressed. However, life need not be filled with feelings of futility if we approach life with a biblical perspective. We can look forward to the future as our loving Lord redeems the experiences of fallen humanity.

Sharing Love

Hebrews 13 marks a significant shift from the focus of the book. While chapters 1-12 lay a wonderful foundation for why we should trust Christ with our salvation and our future, chapter 13 is full of practical instruction for how to live out our faith. This message examines the need for sharing love to be evidenced in the way we assist both strangers and fellow believers near at hand and around the world. Heb. 13:1-3.

Thinking about Marrying

In this sermon I take a look at a the New Testament passages that bear directly on the question of whether to seek marriage. This involves a few principles for living the married life, but the focus is on sane and biblical thinking about pursuing marriage. The scripture advises marriage if it is needful to properly handle the passions toward the divinely created union and as an occasion for good works, but encourages those who are able without "burning with passion" to lead a single and celibate life to do so in order to minimize troubles and cares for the sake of ministry and devotion to the Lord through prayer etc. Yet it must be understood that marrying is no sin and is in fact doing well. I conclude with some practical pointers for responding to these truths.

Enduring Faith - The Secure Kingdom

Hebrews contains 6 warnings for those who encounter the truth of the Gospel. Chapter 12:25-29 gives us the last of those six with an exhortation to listen to truth of the Gospel and accept it. Doing so places us in the most secure kingdom we could possibly desire. Our earthly experience only gives us plenty of opportunity to listen to other voices that will be shaken and eventually destroyed. Not so with the heavenly kingdom of God! We have the opportunity to be a part of a kingdom that cannot be shaken!

Useful Kindness

Kindness is more than the capability of being sympathetic and compassionate.  Biblical Kindness (Gentleness) means "usefulness" and has to do with moral excellence in character or demeanor.  We are only capable of manifesting this Kindness by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.  Need an example?...Look at the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:30-37.

God Wants You

When God led the Israelites out of Egypt into the wilderness, He took them to Mt. Sinai to meet with them. They were terrified by the powerful demostrations of His presence so much that they asked God to only speak to Moses not to them directly. Just as God wanted to speak to and be present with His chosen people in the Old Testament, much more He wants to be near to each of His children today. God wants YOU!

Love Under Pressure

God tells us that one of the most noticeable marks of a spirit-led Christian is patience.  A mature Christian is a patient Christian and the less patient we are… the less mature in Christ we are.  As the Apostle Paul says, longsuffering comes by allowing God’s Spirit to control us.  It's our choice... we need to yield ourselves and allow Him to work in and through us.

Walk by the Spirit

The people of Christ are of the Spirit, not of the flesh. They are enlivened and controlled by the Spirit of God. To depend on the flesh is to operate strictly off of our own (or the devil’s!) resources and ideas. The Letter to the Galatians  urges us to walk by the Spirit rather than by the flesh. This manifests in harmonious relations with other people, in striving to help others, and in a diligent pursuit of holiness in general.

"Joy to the world! The Lord is come!" God's will is for the Christian to have a deep and abiding joy within, in spite of times of sorrow, sickness, or suffering that he may face. However, we need to be alert to the one who wants to take away that joy, Yielding to the temptations of the devil will leave us discouraged and depressed and, little by little, the joy will leak away.

Is His Love Evident?

Jesus told the lawyer in Matthew 22 that the two greatest commandments in the Holy Scriptures are, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind."...and..."Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."  As sincere disciples of Jesus Christ, we have the Holy Spirit living within us and His fruit will be evident.  In Galatians 5, Love is the first of 9 fruits and it encompasses all of the rest.  "...the greatest of these is Love."  Is His love evident in your life?

Ornaments of a Godly Woman

God through his apostles directs Christian women to adorn themselves. Their ornamentation is not to be a display of wealth or of sexual endowments. Rather Christian ladies adorn themselves with good works—deeds of service for their families and communities, with a “gentle and quiet spirit”—after the model of Christ that enables them trustingly do good and avoid fear in the midst of scary situations. This meek and quiet spirit is precious to God, and as an eternal character quality is superior to perishable gold ornaments and money.

After Jesus Christ lived on this earth, died, and rose again, He ascended back into Heaven through the clouds.  During His earthly ministry, He told His followers to keep watching and waiting, because He would return to the earth sometime in the same way that He left.  The Bible indicates that this will happen, it will be sudden, and it will fulfil prophecy.  Are you busily watching and waiting?  Ready or not,...He's coming again!

We Shall Rise

What is the most essential part of our Christian faith?  It is without doubt, the Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.  For, if He is not raised from the dead, then...He is a liar, there is no Gospel, our faith is groundless, we are liars, we have no hope, we suffer for nothing, and we are of all men most miserable.  But, the fact is, He is Risen and we too shall rise!  Praise the LORD!

Saved to the Uttermost

The Old Testament sacrifices that God required of His people were only a temporary reprieve from the judgement that all sin inevitably invokes.  The priests that administered these sacrifices were similarly limited since they themselves were tarnished by sin.  Hebrews 8 establishes the fact that a new priestly order was needed to replace the incompleteness of the Levitical priesthood.  This new priest would be "after the order of Melchisidec", an Old Testament priest/king, who would be able to offer the perfect sacrifice for sin and allow sinful men to be "saved to the uttermost"!

The Slow Death

It usually doesn't happen overnight.  Little by little very small and subtle changes take place that are sometimes hard to detect.  Most times, these changes are deliberate,...but not always.  This is a message based on an Article in our Statement of Faith and Practice here at Wellspring.  The topic? Apostasy..."The Slow Death".  The Bible warns believers of all times that the general tendency is going to be apostasy, and even more so as we approach the latter days and the end of time on earth.  Scriptures are examined and 7 signs of apostasy are discussed as believers are encouraged to be alert in these perilous times.

Destruction or Victory? A Warning Against Apostasy

Hebrews 6 is a parentheses in the ongoing discussion regarding Jesus being the better High Priest.  While apostasy is a possibility, we have no need to allow it to be reality in our lives.  Jesus has cleared the path that allows us to experience a wonderful, personal relationship with God, even when life is difficult, and our faith is stressed.  We are urged to mature spiritually, to be “skilful” in the Word, and to feast on the spiritual meat that belongs to mature Christians. Be strong! Jesus’ finished work on the cross is our hope and anchor!

The New Testament often calls us to imitate Christ in regard to his death on the cross. The cross was a place of submission to his loving righteous Father and of a sort of "submission" to his enemies--in that he responded in love rather than in hatred, revenge, or calling in ten thousand angels. Christians are called to imitate both aspects and the scripture portrays a deep unity between the two. We can call this attitude "yieldedness," whether it finds expression in submission to appropriate and good authority or in a Christlike response to evil.

Hebrews 4 - A Better Rest

Hebrews 4 contrasts the Old Testament rest with the rests afforded the New Covenant Christian.  Believers today are given rest as a result of their conversion and the transformed life, while not a completed rest, it gives rest and freedom from the guilt and power of sin.  The perfect rest comes when the believer reaches their "Promised Land" in the eternal presence of the Lord Himself.

Hebrews 3 - Christ's Superiority Over Moses

Moses was "faithful in all his house" and yet his work and ministry of leading the children of Israel out of Egypt pales by comparison to the completed work of Christ.  Christ's earthly ministry completes what the Old Testament begins in revealing God's character and plan to provide salvation for lost man.  Included in this chapter is a warning against unbelief using the wilderness experience of the children of Israel as a teaching example.

Hebrews 1:4-2:18 - Christ Superiority Over Angels

This study in Hebrew 1 and 2 considers Christ's superior position to the angels.  Christ, as Creator, is superior to His created "ministering servants", the angels.  Not only is He superior in His deity, but He is superior to the angels because of his humanity. His earthly ministry allows Him to offer salvation to man and relate to the human experience in a way that no angel could possibly achieve.
